HEFA2024 Symposium

The HEFA2024 Symposium was held on Saturday, September 28th, 2024, at Bethel AME Congregation in Jamaican Plain. The theme was "Uprooting Mistrust in Latino Mistrust in U.S Healthcare Systems."

Approximately 85 community members attended, excluding the panelists and project team. Most attendees identified as Latino/Hispanic or Black.

The conference featured a diverse panel of experts working in bioethics and doing bioethics at the margins. For more information, please see the full program.

    The past decade has been marked by significant policy changes and technological advancements aimed at tackling longstanding disparities in reproductive healthcare, especially for Black women and women of color. This panel brings together a powerful group to explore the ongoing sociopolitical movements shaping these inequities.     Historic injustices within healthcare systems have created a chasm of distrust, particularly among Latinos and other communities of color. We will hear from community activists, advocacy organizations, and healthcare leaders who are forging partnerships to dismantle these barriers.     Throughout history, communities of color have utilized artistic expression as a powerful tool for healing, connection, and social justice. This panel explores the intersection of arts, health, and culture, recognizing the profound impact artistic practices have on mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. By leveraging the power of storytelling, music, movement, and visual arts, healthcare providers, activists, and community-based programs are creating innovative therapeutic modalities. These approaches not only uplift the values and traditions of Latino and other cultural communities but also provide culturally sensitive pathways for collective healing and improved racial health outcomes.
